Nojeok Ahrem (노적아렘), Danwon Art Museum, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, 2016.9

단원미술관은 안산 시민의 일상 속 여가공간인 노적봉의 끝자락에 위치한다. 노적봉은 산세가 노적가리를 쌓아 놓은 듯하여 붙여진 이름으로, ‘노적가리’는 집 밖이나 들판에 쌓아둔 곡식더미를 의미한다. 들판에서 추수한 곡식단을 타작하기 위하여 한곳에 쌓아놓은 무더기를 말하며, 히브리어로 ‘높게하다’, ‘쌓다’라는 뜻으로 ‘아렘’ 이라 부른다.

‘노적아렘’은, 단원미술관 앞마당에 재활용 팔레트 998개를 높게 쌓아 만들어진 인공적 지형이다. 이 새로운 지형은 노적봉 산줄기가 연장되어 흘러내려온 형태로, 단원미술관 앞마당에 방문객들과 안산시민들을 위한 자유로운 쉼터를 제공해준다. 재활용 팔레트 998개는 세로로, 가로로 서로 엮이며 쌓이며, 아이들에게는 놀이터, 방문객들에게는 그늘 쉼터, 관객들에게는 공연과 관람공간이 되어준다. 팔레트 벽과 바닥은 자연스럽게 미술관 앞마당의 동선과 시야, 그리고 공간 구획해주며, 공간적 다양성을 만들어준다.

The Danwon Art Museum is located at the edge of Nojeok Peak, a leisure space for Ansan citizens. The name nojeok came from its terrain, which resembles nojeok-gari, sheaves of harvest grain piled outside a house or on the field. The term ahren is a Hebrew word meaning “to raise the height” or “to pile up,” and refers to a heap of harvested grains that has been piled up for threshing.

Nojeok Ahrem is an artificial terrain consisting of 998 recycled pallets piled up high in the front yard of the art museum. This new terrain flows down from the extended range of Nojeok Peak, providing a free resting area for visitors and Ansan citizens in the front yard of the museum. The 998 recycled pallets are woven vertically and horizontally to overlap each other, thereby serving as a playground for children, a shaded rest area for visitors, and a performance stage for audiences. Also made from pallets, the walls and the floor naturally divide the traffic line, field of vision, and space in the museum’s front yard, which allows for spatial variety.
